This is the third draft of the 2009 version of caffeinelounge.net. Last year, we tried to make something, but it was way too complicated - I wanted to turn it into a community site. I realized that no one would use most of the features and also that I don't know how cookies work. This year's attempt is RIDICULOUSLY SIMPLE.
In fact, that is the reason why the navigation is in the middle instead of at a normal place. The #cl site is just a collection of things that are unrelated except for the fact that the guys who made them know each other. Chances are, if you come to the site for 32flatbreads, you won't care about the Clash quotes. This is the main idea behind this crazy design. All sections of the site will have slightly differing designs (all based upon this template) and will also link back to the #cl.net home. If this is a bad idea, let me know.
The wordmark/logo/whatever you want to call it was a result of a lot of yelling by a lot of guys, among them food-cat, Isis, Dan 2, and elec. We were playing around with the idea of making the O look more obviously like a cup, with smoke lines, coloration, or handles. I guess we collectively (kind of) decided that it worked the best as only a vague implication of a cup. This is what you see right now.
"Syndicate" is the name of the [new?] forums - the idea/joke being that in the chatroom, new things happen all the time, but in the forums, old things are archived forever. An account will be required to post on the forums, and registration will be password-protected, to prevent spam-guys. This account will be tied to Clash, our quote database. On Clash, the accounts will keep track of quote submitters and preserve votes forever.
I know there's a bit of white space in the bottom two lists and the navigation box - the navigation list is nowhere near complete, and I chose short entries for the two lists to save some time. This is not a problem (well, not an important one.)
Any opinions/comments/anything you have would be awesome!
Is the retro pattern going to follow this onto the actual site as well, or is it to cover up space for this dev? If it is going on the site, we might as well go back into the disco age and grow creepy 70s 'staches.
